Aspen Institute Conference on Journalism and Society
This annual conference is "a neutral forum for approximately 25 leading decision makers in journalism, business, and technology to address the influence of technology and market pressures on the quality of journalism. It is designed to help business and editorial leaders of the news media better understand how they might leverage their influence as leaders to enhance the contributions of the media to democracy and civic life."

Aspen Institute report on journalism and commercial success

Brechner Center for Freedom of Information
The Brechner Center at the University of Florida "answers queries about media law from journalists, attorneys, and other members of the public. The Center is prepared to explain issues relating to media law, react to current developments, offer speakers for meetings and classes, and assist in research about media law." Primarily concerned with Florida law, the center also helps on national issues. Its monthly newsletter is the Brechner Report.

Center for Democracy and Technology
Funded by technology companies, communications companies and related businesses and trade groups. Promotes "democratic values and constitutional liberties in the digital age."

Center for Investigative Reporting
The center in San Francisco is "a base for journalists in pursuit of hidden stories about the individuals and institutions that shape our lives." It also publishes FOI publications, including "Paper Trails: A Guide to Public Records in California."

Center for Public Integrity
This nonprofit organization offers original investigative reports, especially on campaign finance and public safety issues. Its 50 States project is examining the business activities and interests of lawmakers. Founded by executive director Charles Lewis.

Chips Quinn Scholars
Provides training for minority journalism students. A program of the Freedom Forum (formerly the Gannett Foundation).

Citizens' Bill of Journalism Rights
From the Committee of Concerned Journalists, this list offers principles of "what journalists must offer and what citizens should expect."

Committee of Concerned Journalists
"A consortium of reporters, editors, producers, publishers, owners and academics worried about the future of the profession." Its goal: to create a conversation about journalism. Daily briefings, reports and studies.

Cox Center
The James M. Cox Jr. Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research is a unit of the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. "Since its inception, the Center has conducted more than 125 training programs involving countries all over the world, published more than 15 research and technical reports, and conducted research on a variety of topics related to the practice of journalism around the world. The Cox Center also is the home of the Annual Surveys of Journalism & Mass Communication, which provide data on the U.S. journalism labor market."

Dart Center for Journalism and trauma
The Dart Center "is a global network of journalists, journalism educators and health professionals dedicated to improving media coverage of trauma, conflict and tragedy. The Center also addresses the consequences of such coverage for those working in journalism." Awards fellowships to journalists to study emotional injury, its effects on victims of disaster and violence, and its implications for journalists.

Freedom of Information Center
The University of Missouri's center has more than 1,000 paper files on every aspect of FOIA. Online it has a list of each state's records laws by title and citation.

International Center for Journalists
Resources for journalists, from the nonprofit International Center for Journalists, in Washington, D.C. "ICFJ was established in 1984 to improve the quality of journalism in nations where there is little or no tradition of independent journalism."

International Journalists' Network

Maynard Institute for Journalism Education
The Maynard Institute annually conducts the Management Training Center at Northwestern University, and the Editing Program at the University of California, Berkeley. Among the Institute's services is Total Community Coverage, designed to diversify newspaper content.

Media Management Center at Northwestern University
"The Center conducts research on media challenges, collaborates with media organizations to find innovative solutions and provides executive education for leaders in the media industries."

National Arts Journalism Program
This fellowship program, at Columbia University in New York City, hopes "to imnprove the quality and professional standing of arts and cultural journalism." Its fellows are engaged in a study of arts coverage in news organizations, attempting to assess both quantity and quality.

National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting
Boot camps in computer-assisted reporting, from Investigative Reporters and Editors and its National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting. Excellent publications and links.

News Watch
Its mission: to promote dialogue about coverage of minorities. News Watch is a project of the Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism of the San Francisco State University Journalism Department.

Training and advice for TV stations, especially on new ways of telling complex stories. And media biz headlines. Funded by the Park Foundation and affiliated with the Project for Excellence in Journalism.

Pew Research Center for the People and the Press
An opinion research group, sponsored by the Pew Charitable Trusts, studying public attitudes toward the press, politics and public policy issues.

Project for Excellence in Journalism
"An initiative by journalists concerned about the standards of the news media." The director is Tom Rosenstiel. Its projects include the Committee of Concerned Journalists and NewsLab. Affiliated with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. PEJ also works with the Nieman Foundation at Harvard.

Readership Institute
From the Media Management Center at Northwestern University. The institute "focuses on actionable research, field-testing of readership-building ideas and measurement of their success, and education and training for the newspaper industry on readership-building best practices."

Shorenstein Center
The Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy is a Harvard University research center "dedicated to exploring the intersection of press, politics and public policy in theory and practice. The Center strives to bridge the gap between journalists and scholars and, increasingly, between them and the public." Also gives the Goldsmith Award in investigative reporting.

The Global Beat
A resource for journalists covering international issues, with background info, expert sources, and tips. From the Global Reporting Network, a program of the Center for War, Peace, and the News Media at New York University's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The Panos Institute
The Panos Institute, in London, is an independent information provider that aims to stimulate public debate on under-reported global issues, with an emphasis on perspectives from developing countries. Media briefings on topics in the environment, development, information technology, AIDS and health. "Panos also works to strengthen media capacity in developing countries, helping journalists report development issues to both a local and global audience."

The Poynter Institute
Technically a journalism school, Poynter promotes "Everything You Need To Be A Better Journalist."

The Sports Institute at Boston University
Offers a four-week summery training program for sports journalists.

Thomas Jefferson Center
Full name: Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression. Programs in education and the arts, and "resistance to forces that threaten free expression."

Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse
A nonprofit center at Syracuse University that collects and analyze public records, especially from U.S. enforcement agencies, such as the Justice Department and the I.R.S. Also helps reporters on contract analyze public recods.

A workshop for storytellers in the digital age.

Wharton Seminars for Business Journalists
The Wharton Seminars for Business Journalists is a five-day program that has provided nearly 2,000 members of the media insight from Wharton faculty into topics such as financial markets, accounting principles, corporate strategy, and the global economy. Note the list of sponsors. "The Wharton School and generous corporate and foundation sponsors underwrite honoraria for faculty as well as the costs of classroom facilities, materials, and meals."

World Press Institute
Offers a four-month journalism fellowship to 10 countries from around the world. The goal: "immersion into the ... United States." The director is John Ullmann, former executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors.
