Brechner Center for Freedom of Information
The Brechner Center at the University of Florida "answers queries about media law from journalists, attorneys, and other members of the public. The Center is prepared to explain issues relating to media law, react to current developments, offer speakers for meetings and classes, and assist in research about media law." Primarily concerned with Florida law, the center also helps on national issues. Its monthly newsletter is the Brechner Report.

Center for Investigative Reporting
The center in San Francisco is "a base for journalists in pursuit of hidden stories about the individuals and institutions that shape our lives." It also publishes FOI publications, including "Paper Trails: A Guide to Public Records in California."

Chilling Effects Clearinghouse
A joint project of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, University of San Francisco, and University of Maine law school clinics; provides background material and explanations of First Amendment and intellectual property-related laws; they are also compiling a database of people/sites that have received cease-and-desist notices. There are ongoing topics, news updates, and reports on the current "weather."

CollegeFreedom.org
Information on freedom of the college press, academic freedom for students and faculty. From John K. Wilson, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Educational Administration and Foundations at Illinois State University, and a graduate assistant at the Center for the Study of Education Policy.

DOJ FOIA files
Guides to using the Freedom of Information Act for FBI files and other information from the U.S. Department of Justice. Also a list of contact people for FOIA at agencies.

Electronic Frontier Foundation
A nonprofit civil-liberties organization that protects privacy, free expression and access to public information. Prints online its "Citizen's Guide to FOIA" and other information.

Electronic Privacy Information Center
This nonprofit advocacy group on issues of privacy and civil liberties offers biweekly alerts.

FBI Electronic Reading Room
Information from the most-requested FBI files: John Wilkes Booth, J. Edgar Hoover, John Lennon, the Rosenbergs, John Steinbeck, UFOs, Weatherman Underground, even John Wayne.

Fill-in-the-blanks FOIA Letter Generator
A handy tool from the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. Will generate a Freedom of Information Act letter, with the proper address for the agency.

First Amendment Center
Devoted to monitoring the state of the first amendment; has all the latest headlines pertaining to the subject, as well as a large topic database containing information on subjects ranging from school uniforms to cameras in the courtroom to abortion protests. Has a library of reports on the amendment, as well as court records that can be searched.

First Amendment Cyber-Tribune
"A resource for anyone wanting to learn about the First Amendment." Odds and ends mostly. But worth a look.

FOI Resource Center
A comprehensive site from the Society of Professional Journalists.

FOIA Case Log Database
For IRE members only: A collection of FOIA case logs from U.S. government agencies, compiled by Michael Ravnitzky and made available by Investigative Reporters and Editors.

Freedom Forum Online
Freedom Forum current information on the First Amendment. Also surveys, critiques, fellowships and education for journalism. From the former Gannett Foundation.

Freedom of Information Center
The University of Missouri's center has more than 1,000 paper files on every aspect of FOIA. Online it has a list of each state's records laws by title and citation.

International Federation of Journalists
Active in protecting journalists from human rights abuses, the International Federation of Journalists, based in Belgium, is the world's largest organization of journalists. "Established in 1926, it was relaunched in 1946 and again, in its present form, in 1952. Today the Federation represents around 450,000 members in more than 100 countries." The site is in English and French. Links to member guilds and associations, programs, publications.

Journalism Ethics Cases Online
Dozens of case studies for journalists and students, from the School of Journalism at Indiana University. "The initial core of this database comes from a series of cases developed by Barry Bingham, Jr., and published in his newsletter, FineLine."

Legal Defense Hotline
Hotline open 24 hours a day for journalists and media lawyers on access and other issues, operated by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.

National Freedom of Information Coalition
Begun in 1989, the coalition helps educate the public, nurtures FOI programs, and shares ideas among members. Has an excellent list of state-by-state contacts. Also runs a mailing list on FOI topics. Its Education for Freedom project offers a curriculum and lesson plans for educators who teach about the First Amendment.

National Security Archive
This nonprofit research institute houses government records that it has received under vigorously fought FOIA requests on foreign affairs, intelligence, defense and international economic policy. Founded in 1985 by journalists and scholars. Now at George Washington University. Its digital national security archive contains more than 35,000 documents. And it helpfully includes the photos of Elvis Presley meeting with Richard Nixon.

Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
A leading resource of advice for journalists on freedom of information matters in the U.S. Its hotline offers free legal help to journalists and news organizations. Offers a variety of publications and services on Freedom of Information issues, including state-by-state legal guides and handbooks on the federal FOIA.

Resources on Freedom of Information
A full list of FOI groups, contacts, publications and mailing lists, compiled by Barbara Croll Fought of Syracuse University.

Society of Professional Journalists
The largest journalism organization, providing seminars, resources and legal help on FOI and ethics. Its magazine, Quill, is published nine times a year. Also has a mailing list, open to journalists and others.

Speak Out
Advice and "activism centers" for the public, to aid freedom of expression. Includes the former Policy.com daily issue briefing.

Starving Artists Law
Especially for cartoonists. Links to volunteer lawyers, syndicate contracts, and info on copyright and trademark law.

Thomas Jefferson Center
Full name: Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression. Programs in education and the arts, and "resistance to forces that threaten free expression."

Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse
A nonprofit center at Syracuse University that collects and analyze public records, especially from U.S. enforcement agencies, such as the Justice Department and the I.R.S. Also helps reporters on contract analyze public recods.

U.S. Department of Justice FOIA Office
The central federal contact for FOIA information and resources. Links to principal FOIA contacts at federal agencies. Its "FOIA Update" is an annual newsletter from the Office of Information and Privacy. Also publishes a "DOJ Guide to the FOIA," a 500-page book interpreting the federal FOIA.
