Bureau of Justice Statistics
Useful statistics about crime, including homocide, prosecution and expenditure trends. Part of the U.S. Justice Department, BJS "is the Nation’s primary source for criminal justice statistics. CancerLit
This bibliographic database provides access to more than 1.3 million citations and abstracts from cancer literature. More than 4,000 sources are consulted, including biomedical journals, reports, proceedings, and theses, to create this database, dating from 1963. The National Cancer Institute updates CANCERLIT with more than 8,000 records a month.

Catalog of U.S. Government Publications
The Catalog of United States Government Publications, from the U.S. Government Printing Office, indexes information distributed through the Federal Depository Library Program and is available for online searching as part of the GPO Access Federal Locator services. Once a publication is identified, a link is available to locate depository libraries that receive that publication. The database contains cataloging records published in the Catalog since January 1994 and is updated daily. The print and CD-ROM counterparts of this index is the Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications, sometimes referred to as MOCAT.

Instead of searching anew at Thomas (what the Library of Congress calls its Web service, in honor of Thomas Jefferson), you can save your Thomas search queries, then check back periodically to see new items only. Allows a comprehensive search of items from 1993 to date. This is a personalized search extension of the Thomas service from the Library of Congress, provided by the University of North Carolina. Deficit Watch
A tool for reporters dealing with economic issues, Deficit Watch is a bi-monthly report on mounting government and private sector deficits. U.S. DEFICIT WATCH is the Authoritative Monitor of Government and Other Deficits compiled from public records and budget documents. Fairly new site, but the limited number of reports they have are excellent and cut research time drastically.

Good starting point for a military search. Links to official information about current U.S. military missions, and allows search by special interest topics.

Digest of Education Statistics
An annual compilation that serves as a snapshot of education in the U.S.: the number of schools and colleges, teachers, enrollments, and graduates, educational attainment, finances, federal funds for education, employment and income of graduates, libraries, and international education. Supplemental information on population trends, attitudes on education comparisons, education characteristics of the labor force, government finances, and economic trends. Much of the information comes from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Environmental Health Information Service
EHIS, a service of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, is the most extensive international database of searchable information on the environment, toxicity, and cancer. Search and retrieve full text from Environmental Health Perspectives and its supplements, Chemical Health and Safety Database, carcinogens reports, toxicology technical reports, and the Tumor Incidence in Historical Control Animals Report. Portions of this service cost for access. Depository librarians can assist you with this service.

ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center)
The Educational Resources Information Center is a national information system providing access to an extensive body of education-related literature. It is supported by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Educational Research and Improvement, and the National Library of Education. Contains abstracts of report literature in education. First published in paper in Office of Education Reports, 1956 – 65 and as Resources in Education (RIE), a monthly index with semiannual cumulations, from 1966 to date.

FDIC Banking Review
The FDIC Banking Review is a quarterly publication that provides original research on issues related to banking and deposit insurance. Federal Consumer Information Center
Visitors can read, print out or download the text of more than 200 federal publications on topics such as cars, money, children, education, home, travel, small business, food and health. The site features all of the publications listed in the current Consumer Information Catalog and others that are not inlcuded in the catalog, or that were featured in previous editions of the catalog. The site also features a consumer help section, listings of current scams and recalls, links to hundreds of government, corporate, nonprofit and other helpful web sites, and the latest news from federal agencies. The site also has a page where the media can sign up for regular FCIC alerts.

Federal Grand Jury
Reporters not already familiar with how grand juries work in the U.S. can find a short explanation of why grand juries will be employed in the cases of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Law professors Susan Brenner and Lori Shaw at the University of Dayton provide this Federal Grand Jury site, with frequently asked questions and info on both state and federal grand juries.

GPO Access
Access to much of the bureaucratic paper in Washington, electronically, from the Government Printing Office. This database provides full descriptive summaries of more than 2,000,000 titles NTIS has received from government agencies since 1964. It offers unparalleled bibliographic coverage of U.S. government and worldwide government-sponsored research.

Trade information by industry sector, states, metro areas, etc.

Official U.S. Time
Gives the official time for U.S. time zones. From the atomic clocks of the National Institute of Standards and the U.S. Naval Observatory. The agencies claim that Web users can expect readings that are accurate to much better than one second.

PACER
The official dockets of most U.S. Federal courts (District, Bankruptcy and Appellate) are available on a dial-up, pay-per-use service called PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records). Requires a computer and modem and communications software. Each court has a different modem number; all that is centralized is the billing. Most courts charge 60 cents a minute. The PACER Service Center on the Web is the Federal Judiciary's centralized registration, billing, and technical support center for this service. Also see the U.S. Party/Case Index, which can be searched on the Web, for a fee. Many courts also now have links to RACER (Real-Time Access to Court Electronic Access), which gives copies of the court documents. See the court list.

PACER U.S. Party/Case Index
A new service, operated by PACER, allowing national or regional searches of court records by name and Social Security Number in the bankruptcy index, party name and nature of suit in the civil index, and party name in the criminal index. "Not all federal courts participate in the U.S. Party/Case Index." The fee is 7 cents per page. A login and password are required. Billing is quarterly.

Information about violence and youth-at-risk, representing data from seven different Federal agencies. Searchable. Designed to help states and local communities.

The Right Site: Census Searches

U.S. Food and Drug Administration

U.S. Government Accountability Office
Previously known as the General Accounting Office. A lot of journalists use this one. The GAO Daybook is a daily update on reports, documents and testimony. It comes in two forms: an announcement by title and number of pages; and, a few days later, with a URL to the GAO site.

U.S. House of Representatives Internet Law Library
U.S. and state laws, laws of other nations, treaties, etc.

U.S. Patent Database
Search databases of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. U.S. Patent Bibliographic Database provides information on patents issued since January 1, 1976. The AIDS Patent Database provides the full text and images of patents for AIDS-related devices issued by Japanese, European, and U.S. patent offices. Depository libraries may have earlier print and microfiche materials or current CD-ROMs to assist you.

U.S. Tax Court
Now you can search for tax cases involving individuals and companies at the U.S. Tax Court. You can look up an individual by name with "docket inquiry," or see newest cases with "today's opinions," or see all the opinions from a particular time frame with "historical opinions." Let's say you want to see all the opinions from a certain month; the asterisk (*) wildcard can be used in the date field; to search for all opinions released in January 2002, enter 01/**/02 in the date field. You can't see the documents online, but you can find a status and attorney's names (click on "parties" when you see a case).

Uniform Bank Performance Report
The great unknown document for comparing banks is the Uniform Bank Performance Report, which compares institutions (a) over time, and (b) against their peer group of same-sized institutions. You can buy UBPR's, or read them for free at a Federal Reserve library. But now they're online.
